2018 is fast approaching. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘new year, new me’ a few too many times, but with the new year does come a new opportunity to practise the art of reinvention.

These simple style resolutions for 2018 will help you win back your confidence and make sure that the next year in your life is a memorable one in terms of personal style, personal brand and your corporate image.

1.     Do a wardrobe review

The most important aspect of great personal style is a well organised and curated wardrobe. It’s time to take a serious look at your cupboard and get rid of what no longer serves you. Start by getting a full-length mirror – you’ll need to try everything on when editing your wardrobe. Remove any items that you no longer wear, items that no longer fit, items that or damaged or worn and items that no longer suit your current life. Organise everything well and make sure there is no clutter. This is the first step towards improving your style.

2.    Take it to the tailor

If you have any quality items of clothing that are a little too big or aren’t fitting you right, take it to the tailor. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what a difference a few alterations can make. Often times, the difference between a great outfit and a style disaster, is simply the fit. Make sure that your trousers and blazers fit your body well – it’ll make your overall look seem more sophisticated and intentional.

3.    Think sustainability

With the ever-increasing need to care for the environment and our fellow human race, take sustainability into consideration for the year ahead. Do a little research before heading out to the shops and try where possible to support local brands or to support sustainable and socially conscious brands such as Everlane.

4.    Put your best foot forward

I talk about this a lot. Your shoes are a crucial part of your overall outfit. I encourage you to take this resolution to heart in 2018 and truly put your best foot forward. So often, I see women with great outfits and cheap or worn shoes. This takes away from their look and makes them appear less put-together. Invest in some quality smart flat shoes or some block heel ballerinas.

5.    Stop looking at the size on the label

As I mentioned in point two above when it comes to looking good in your clothes, size and fit make the world of difference. Instead of shopping according to the size on the labels of your clothes, rather buy according to the fit. Your mind and body will thank you for it! When trying on clothes, think about how they feel – don’t let your confidence ride on a number.

6.    Stop buying on impulse

How many items do you have in your wardrobe that you have never worn before? If you’ve ever gone shopping in a rush or when you’re down, you’ve likely fallen victim to impulse shopping. Rather than buying what you don’t need in the heat of the moment, make sure you’re aware of what’s in your wardrobe at the moment and do some research online first for what you’re looking for.

Follow these six style resolutions for 2018 and you’ll be well on your way to a more confident, stylish and polished version of yourself. Take this opportunity to present your best self to the year ahead.
