By far one of my most recommended wardrobe essentials is a black wool coat.

Unless black is not one of your Key Colours go for a good quality black coat that will last years, season after season, because this is an item you can count on to never go out of fashion.  If black is not good for you, go for navy, grey or camel instead.

Versatile is an understatement, a black wool coat really does look good with anything and suits an off duty jeans and trainers look, or a workday dress and heels.

I prefer one with more room, in a cocoon style with drop shoulders as it is easier to fit a jacket underneath, or be worn a bit bigger in a relaxed style. Here are my 3 of the best out available in stores and online now.

Max Mara Melina Coat, £555

Max Mara Studio’s black Melina coat is my favourite! Its comes in a few colours, and is available every year. It showcases the label’s minimalist take on sophistication. Made from mid-weight wool and shaped to a funnel neck silhouette with contouring darts through the loose shape, you can wear it over smart tailoring as well as with your weekend wardrobe.

COS Boucle-Wool Cocoon Coat £190

This COS coat is generously cut in a cocoon fit from a softly-looped bouclé-wool blend with a silky lining and fused finishes. Loosely fitted with dropped shoulders, it has concealed front buttons and has pockets both inside and outside.

Topshop Brushed Coat with Wool, £149

This Topshop black ‘brushed’ super soft coat is great. It is made in a wool mix, so is warm and a very versatile style which will work with casual or smart pieces.
